A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

What is ClipKing?

ClipKing is a native Mac app that turns YouTube videos into vertical MP4 clips with burned-in captions. You can pick the clip settings, watch your results inside the app, and copy or drag out the files.

Can I try the app yet?

Yes. Download the current development build from this page, open the DMG, and drag ClipKing into Applications. Read the setup instructions below before your first run. The app is locally signed and not notarized, so macOS may block opening it.

What is Chat to clip?

Paste a YouTube link and describe a statement or topic. ClipKing searches the transcript for a matching moment and creates a clip. It reports when no matching statement is found.

Where can I use the finished clips?

The app exports vertical 1080 × 1920 MP4 files, suitable for uploading to YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, or TikTok. ClipKing doesn’t post to these services automatically. Use videos you own or have permission to repurpose.

Does everything happen on my Mac?

Rendering and clip storage happen on your Mac. YouTube videos are downloaded from YouTube. AI-assisted selection and translation use your configured AI provider, so relevant transcript text may be sent to that provider.

What Mac do I need?

The development build targets macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. It currently requires a few video-processing tools to be installed. See the setup instructions below for the required tools.

What will it cost?

The development build is available to download here at no charge. AI features use your own configured provider, whose subscription or usage costs may apply. Future pricing hasn’t been announced.

Install and setup
  1. Open the DMG and drag ClipKing into Applications.
  2. Install Python 3, yt-dlp, and FFmpeg with subtitle support. If you use Homebrew:brew install python yt-dlp ffmpeg-full
  3. For AI highlights, Chat to clip, or translation, sign in to Claude or Codex CLI. Your provider needs available quota. Automatic clipping can also use video chapters without AI.
  4. Open ClipKing, paste a YouTube link, and make your first clips.

Videos without subtitles also need faster-whisper installed for the Python interpreter shown in Settings.

This is a locally signed development build, not a notarized release. macOS may block opening it. Clips are stored locally in your chosen output folder.
